A few years ago, our French buyer asked why we don't drink more Cabernet Franc? It's one of the major red grape varietals of the wine world, generally blended with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in Bordeaux, but the potential for making stand alone, single varietal wines like the Calcu Gran Reserve is extremely high, if you know where to look. Three 90+ ratings for this boutique project from Rodrigo Romero and Xavier Chone, whose credentials include Opus One, Dominus, and Chateau d'Yquem, is a stunning example of the varietal. Ripe berries, licorice, violets and brown spice give this wine amazing energy, with a lush mid-palate and serious tannins on the finish. If you can steer yourself away from your favorite Bordeaux, you will be richly rewarded!
"Dark purple in hue. The nose presents raspberry, plum and ash notes. The flavorful palate is fairly taut with finely grained tannins and a mild, refreshing flow. An enjoyable red from a warm year; the newer, less extractive style was the right way to go in this location." Vinous Media, 91 Points
"The varietal range always includes small percentages of other grapes, like the 2020 Gran Reserva Cabernet Franc that has 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Carmenere. This range has good ripeness; this has 14% alcohol but no excess. It has restraint and balance, some varietal character and fine tannins with integrated oak after one year in barrel."
